Organic Music Tapes vol 4 – Review

Portuguese composer, pianist and organist Tiago Sousa has for some time been making a habit of delighting fans of minimalist sound at the beginning of the year by treating them to his “organic music tapes”.

In the fourth installment of the cassette series, in addition to the piano as the primary instrument with which he began his journey three years ago following the traces of the past, Tiago plays the clavinet and electric organ, and manipulates magnetic tapes, further enhancing his sound.

As can be heard and read, the composer on the “four” continues with dedicated nurturing and deepening of the tradition of early American minimalism embodied in the music of greats such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Charlamagne Palestine, skillfully “sculpting” it in his own way, thus creating multilayered forms subject to transformations at the micro level.

Before us is yet another, perhaps the most detailed, answer by Tiago as to how original minimalism can and should sound today, and at the same time irrefutable proof that this apparently rigid style still has a lot to offer.

In order for you to be convinced of what has been written, four of the six tracks are currently available for you to listen to, along with an interesting accompanying text, on the bandcamp page of the publishing house.
